woman upset by theater mix-up

Yesterday a friend turned me onto Lark News, a Christian satire site that is probably not for everyone. If you think you might be offended by satire, don't visit the site, but instead enjoy today's pre-screened material below. The following "news story" is unfortunately extremely close to real life. In fact, for all I know it could actually happen.

LANCASTER, Pa. — Maria Holsapple thought she was attending performances at the local community theater, but after twelve weeks, she was angered to learn she had been attending Oak Grove Center, a 3,000-member church."

"I would never willingly go into an evangelical church," says Holsapple, a practicing Catholic.

She came after Oak Grove mailed her "tickets" to upcoming "drama presentations." She enjoyed the "mini-concert, the play and the motivational speech they threw in at the end," she says.

"It worked well as performance art," she says. "I was convinced it was a groundbreaking new theater company."

But when neighbors remarked that they had seen her at church, Holsapple called Oak Grove and discovered it was a house of worship.

"The pastor quoted Jesus, but he quoted Socrates, too, and Britney Spears," she says. "How was I to know?"

If you're one of those who's growing more and more alarmed at what we're doing to the name of Christ and to the witness, love, obedience, and life that should exemplify the Church, I recommend that you acquire and read two books: God's The Bible and Frank Viola's Reimagining Church. The former is absolutely essential; it is the vehicle by which we can know our Creator and honor Him out of love (and much, much more!). The latter addresses some current cultural issues and will give you fresh hope that purity and holiness can be restored to the Church and that it can be free from bondage to cultural fads as well as tradition.

Signs

I'll tell more about today's trip with my parents and brother, but I wanted to quickly pass along a couple of signs that we saw today. I'm not happy with my potential captions, so I'll just give you the raw data...

Overheard in the Swimming Pool

Today was a good day.

I spent the first part of it working on our deck, a gift and huge blessing that my dad along with vocalist extraordinaire Josh (Melissa's husband) helped me build. Our modest, above-ground pool is also, very literally, a blessing. I almost started laughing, but at the same time wished I could have my innocence back when my daughter and her friend were trying to figure out what to play in the pool.

Sitting on inner tube-style inflatables, Alaina's friend said to her, "Want to flip each other off?" Mercifully, my daughter suggested something different.

(If you don't get that, you still retain a wonderful amount of innocence.)

If Star Wars Were a TV Show

From BabuLife, the blog of one of my most recent Twitter additions (@babusaada), comes a seriously funny YouTube link: If Star Wars were a TV Show. If you're old enough to have watched goofy TV shows in the late 70's, this will be extra special to you.

I'm not sure if it's etiquette for me to post the video since he's the one who "found" it (though I think sometimes we make the rules up as we go along), so I'm erring on the side of caution. Show Babu some luv and check out the video! (I think all modern worship pastors are supposed to have that not-really-a-goatee-or-beard thing below their bottom lip. Babu is continued evidence.)

Signage

Thanks to our intrepid drummer/photographer John King, below is a sign at a fast-food restaurant where we stopped on the way to Adore 2009, a worship team conference at Lenny Leblanc's church fellowship this morning, hosted by Faith Church in Florence and The Rock FWC, here in Huntsville. (Conference was great, by the way! A little too short, though.)

Say it Ain't So: Copyright Infringement!!

Sure, he thought he could just slow it down a little and get away with it. But it's now official: Don Moen ripped off Kool and the Gang! It's hard to believe, but true. I've created an audio clip to reveal the results of my years of sleuthing to the world. (The clip is only 16 seconds long, so I trust I'm not infringing on any copyrights.)

If Jingles Were More Revealing

An alternate title, "Truth in Advertising," would be a lot more boring.

Here is a jingle parody (link updated -- 03 01 09) I recorded about a local music store where I used to work (I recorded it while I was working there, just for fun). It was done quickly, hence the pitchy vocals. No apologies there. The "bleeps" in the audio do not mask curse words; they replace the name of the store. While this was not the actual attitude of our store, it sure was fun to write the jingle.

Stop here. If you didn't download the jingle at the link above, do that now, because the rest of the post won't have nearly as much impact if you don't. I happen to know (Big Brother told me) that people are reading, but at least half are not downloading the jingle. Where's the fun in that?

There, now you may start reading again.

(A couple of notes: The voiceover is pretty bad, but I don't have a version without it anymore. Otherwise I'd replace it with something a little more inspired. The guitar solo behind the voiceover was an inside gag -- in our minds it mimicked the playing style of some of the younger partons who tried out guitars. This will make you never want to go into a music store again, I'm sure. We were mean in those days.)

My question for the day is, if we were to begin advertising for our churches with jingles and had to be totally truthful in them, would the words parallel our professed God, mission, attitude, and mindset? Or would we have to do something more along the lines of the music store jingle? I'm not beating up the bride of Christ. I'm just asking if our jingle would say something like this (it sounds more like an old limerick):

We shouldn't be grumbling; we shouldn't complain,
But you should have been there for "worship" today.
We had to sing one line about 80 times.
And none of the songs was a favorite of mine.

Get this: in the classroom we froze off our cans
I hope that they fire that dumb maintenance man.
With so many problems, not sure why I stay,
But won't you come join us in God's house today?

Etc.

You Can't Polish...

NOTE: The download link just below wasn't working this morning, so I've changed it. Should work now.

You really must listen to this: "Scar Wars (Main Theme)"

It is my own personal rendition of a sub-par middle school band playing "Star Wars (Main Theme)". I did it on a keyboard several years ago as a MIDI file and just this morning converted it to an MP3, which actually enhanced the overall sound quite a bit.

Background on why in the world I did this... Many years ago when I worked at local music stores, a favorite pastime of mine and the other sales professionals was to make fun of people's skillz after they left the store (only if we thought they were arrogant or snot-nosed punks, though). We'd pick up a guitar, plug it into an amp with really ugly-sounding distortion and play "Crazy Train" or "Sweet Home Alabama," bending notes ever so slightly sharp, and misfretting notes intentionally.

Yes, I know, that was not nice. Nearly the equivalent of working at a coffee shop and spitting in someone's coffee. Okay, maybe not. And it evolved into making full-band arrangements with MIDI files, and even a real-life jingle parody that I can't post because I might be sued for libel.

So anyhow, I took that "Star Wars" MIDI file and converted it from a cheesy-sounding thing (which you can download here for comparison) to a much better-sounding MP3. But does it actually sound "better"? There's more clarity and the instruments sound more authentic, but to be honest, that actually makes it sound even worse, no?

Can anyone finish the analogy for me here? There are a couple, at least.

Church Slogan #8

Happy Monday!

Finally finished it. Not too difficult, but I wanted to make sure it was just right. Kewpie doll to Preston for the slogan!

Church Slogan #7

Submitted by friend and commenter Leroy. Slightly minimalist look.

Working on Preston's submission, but I can't seem to go minimalist on it, so it'll take a little more time.

Church Slogan #6

This may be the last one in the series. I've posted it before, and it's probably the one that will apply to most of us across the board who aren't in a home church fellowship. It makes me smile.

:0)

See?

By the way, I've lost the source file on this one, also, so I can't change "Wall Highway" to "Anytown." This is not meant to be a statement about my church fellowship.

Come on, friends, commenters, and lurkers! Give me some more slogans!

22 October 2008

Church Slogan #5

Almost forgot to pick up where I left off on the slogans. I should point out John 13:35 first: "Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples."

Church Slogan #3

So far, I have to say that I'm really disappointed at the lack of responses on new slogan ideas. You would all be totally fired as my consultants if this were the real thing, you know.

I lost the source file on this image, so I can't edit out the name of my real, live church fellowship. No matter, though, because the slogan holds up just fine.

"We like people. Even you."

Church Slogan #2

I don't suppose any of you remember the video game Zero Wing, do you? It's infamous because of its humorously poor translation from Japanese to American. It was so horrid that it sparked a video which became an internet phenomenon several years ago: "All your base are belong to us."

I'm posting only the game video; the longer music video that was made from it (you know, the phenomenon thing) has enough questionable parts to prevent me from posting it. You've got to at least watch the part below if you've never seen it. The full video is out there on YouTube if you want to hunt it down.

Which brings me to today's slogan... Some of you may find it hilarious, some of you may think, "Oooooo-kay." Definitely a niche thing.

"All your church are belong to Us."

Church Slogan #1

I've posted twice today (this post being number two), so be sure to read the post below this one (and the ones below that one if you haven't checked in for a couple of days).

I don't think I've posted specifically about this before, and I don't feel like simply searching my own blog. That'd be too easy, not to mention the fact that it would take away my reason for writing this one. Also, many of you are new readers and may not have seen past posts.

In my quest to come up with a slogan a year or two ago, I decided to put my humor brain cell into overdrive. I submitted some of these to The Wittenburg Door (a "Christian" satire magazine which I liked for a while) and they published them at their website but not in the magazine, the latter of which would have brought me some cold, hard cash.

In order to give myself blogging material for several days, I will present the slogans one at a time rather than all at once. Here is the first (with thanks to commenter Lisa for collaboration): "If a catchy slogan is all it takes to get you to go to church, welcome home!"

Please place your own submission(s) in the comments and I'll whip up a graphic. Matter of fact, if I have more than a few entries, I may pull a Jeff Miller and have a book giveaway for the winner.

What They Say/What They Mean

I can't wake up today! It's raining and I'm thinking about the road trip to the Catalyst Conference (about four hours westward) with a group from our church fellowship. I'd appreciate your prayers for us as we travel, participate in worship, hear the Word, and look for refreshment, new perspectives, and new ideas. Also, please pray for those who will be leading and speaking at the conference. I'll attempt to post daily wrap-ups about what goes on, but I'm not one for journaling, and I'm sure Rich Kirkpatrick or someone like that will do a better job of it, so I imagine I'll only hit the very high points.

I definitely intend to do some sort of Catalyst worship leader fashion wrap-up. It's my theory that there will be about four or five general templates for dress code and hairstyles among the attendees. We shall see...

I want to leave you with a few things before I go, a la blogger Tony M -- several thoughts in one post. Notice all the tags/topics at the bottom of the post.

Today (when he probably should have been sleeping) Tony posted a link to a rough demo of a new song of his, called "Not Me - Him!" and I believe you'll really enjoy both the lyrics and the music. It's a bit eerie-sounding on the verses, which makes me like it even more -- it's not like anything I would have anticipated, having read the lyrics a while back but not having a clue about the music. Good, memorable musical "hook" on the chorus, too.

Tony also mentions in his post that Google Chrome, a new browser getting good reviews, apparently likes this site (http://www.deanlusk.com/). Cool!

Finally, I received an e-mail in the wee hours of the morning that cracked me up. I'm not sure who the author is, so I can't give credit where it's due (UPDATE: found out that Perry Noble is the author. Also found this linked at http://www.jeffkapusta.com). I hope that you find it amusing rather than offensive. I get a black eye in here, too, so this is not aimed at anyone...

What They Say: “I’m looking for a church that preaches the Word!”
What They Mean: “I’m looking for a church that preaches my view of the Word. I think the BLANK translation should be used… I think BLANK should be talked about a lot while BLANK should be ignored. And if you ever stop preaching my view of the Word I will leave and tell others that you don’t preach the Word!”

What They Say: “Lots of people have been coming to me and saying they don’t like is…”
What They Mean: “I basically only have three friends… and all of them think exactly like me. The other night we were enjoying a time of self-righteousness because, after all, we are right about everything… and were also slandering you (in the form of prayer requests) and thought it would be wise to approach you with our pet peeve. We’ve actually talked to no one else about this but said 'lots' because we wanted to validate our dysfunction.”

What They Say: “I’m leaving the church.”
What They Mean: “Beg me to stay. If you will just ask me I will share with you several ways you can compromise God’s vision that He’s given you, thus becoming nothing more than a people pleasing pastor who is more interested in popularity than obedience. If you don’t bow to my demands I will remind you that I tithe and that the church needs my money, reducing you to a mere preaching whore: one who is paid for a service for the pleasure of another person.”

What They Say: “I want a church that is more focused on discipleship.”
What They Mean: “I want a church where everyone knows me and how important I am! I don’t want to reach people who are different from me, be it economic class or race or even musical preference. I already know WAY more than I put into practice, but I somehow equate spirituality with knowledge rather than application, and I rather enjoy feeling intellectually superior to those who don’t know as much as me.”

What They Say: “Don’t take this personally…but…”
What They Mean: “I am about to lower the BOOM on you, but you can’t get angry because I told you not to take it personally. Even though you have dedicated your life to this and pretty much invest every ounce of energy you have to this cause -- and I think about it once or twice a week -- you need to receive my attacks, even when they are personal. And you cannot retaliate because, remember: it’s not personal.”

Feel free to add your own "What They Say/What They Mean" statements on the comments.

Have a great day!

Say What You Mean

Tina, a friend and DJ at our local Christian radio station, WAY-FM, sent me this photo the other day.

Now, this isn't just a typo. Some effort went into making this sign. So how would one assume that they're on the up-and-up about it? Ever run into a situation like this in your church fellowship? where someone does something and you think that it just isn't possible that there are two ways to look at it?

What do you do in a situation like that?

Oddly, this is my first post with a "humor" tag at the bottom!
