My son is 13 years old and doesn't have a mustache.
Last night I dreamed he called me into his room. I walked in and, in the dim light, saw a slightly shaded area over his lip. I thought, "Hey, I didn't know he had a mustache." Then he looked at me with that quick flash of exasperation that we all make that's meant to say, "C'mon, look!" With that, he peeled off a layer of transparent tape with little dots on it from the mustache area and said, "They're supposed to be smaller [dots that look like whiskers]." As I looked closer, I saw that the tape had Sharpie-sized dots on it; not a very convincing mustache.
(If any of you know my son, do not tell him about the "practical illustration" in today's post! I will put the smack-down on you somehow...)
The author of Hebrews explained a number of things about Jesus Christ in relation to the believer, and in chapter five he stops and says this:
There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
Hebrews 5:11-14 (NLT)
How many believers are content to stay at an infantile level and instead of growing, put on an aritifical mustache so that people around them will regard them as mature? You're not in that group, are you?
Manga, anyone?

Very cool illustration.
This verse leads me to beleive then that if we take the analogy to its logical conclusion, that if one were to feed an infant a constant diet of milk then eventually the infant will die.
Therefore, I think it is essential that as a healthy Chirst-follower we can never sit back on our heels and be satisfied with just "milk", but rather we need something with a little more "protein".
Dean,
This is a good stuff. As a father of 4 I can really relate to the illustration and definately appreciate the point you and the writer of Hebrews is making. Let's stop sucking our thumbs and grow up. Oh, and no fakers allowed. Nicely done.
Thanks for linking to my site: www.TransformedDaily.com. EGBDF is now a link at TD.
God bless you and keep speaking truth with passion and without shame.
By the way, I have played bass on worship bands for the past 15 years. I have literally "created" my own band as my kids now can rock the house for Jesus. I have some links on TD if you want to take a listen to The Jones Band.
