Not a Sinner? Not a Candidate.

Jesus once said, "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." (Luke 5:32, NASB, also found in Mark 2:17) Have you ever thought He was peppering that statement with a bit of irony? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Jesus had complete freedom to say, "I have not come to call those who think they are righteous..." (as the NLT renders the passage), but He didn't.

"If you're not a sinner, you're not a candidate for the kingdom of God." - author and speaker Frank Viola, speaking about Pharisees in ancient Israel in a podcast interview on his and Leonard Sweet's recent book Jesus Manifesto

Regardless of how you read Jesus Christ's statement, I thought you'd enjoy the fresh irony and perspective that Viola offered here. Feel free to drop your own comments below.
