Unlockable Items

I've played a number of adventure games in which you can't complete all of the tasks on the first level until you've completed a subsequent level and unlocked a new tool or inventory item. Then you can take the piece of inventory back to the first level and complete all of its tasks. This is sometimes called "unlocking" something in the game.

I was reading 1 Peter 3 this morning. 1 Peter ranks up there with the books of James and Philippians to me in that it talks about some really simple principles in an accessible way. Funny thing; the principles are so simple, adult Christians may think that we're supposed to graduate from them.

Here's the Level One principle:

Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.
- 1 Peter 3:9 (NLT)

And here's the item from later on (it's perpetual, actually) that you'll have to take back in order to carry the Level One principle out:

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
- Romans 12:2 (NLT)

Unfortunately, for most of us, by the time we get around to the second, we've left the first one behind and fail to return to it. That leaves us with some really warped versions of Christ-following.
