Church Slogan #4 - Blog Action Day 2008

I thought I'd combine a couple of efforts. Today is Blog Action Day 2008, and the theme is "Poverty." I will confess that I do not know poverty. I haven't experienced it, nor have I really been among those in poverty.

Most of the readers of this blog, I'm guessing, attend traditional church fellowships (that is, brick and mortar houses of worship; not traditional music-based fellowships). Would this slogan be appropriate for any of them?

Based on my thought processes for this post, I want you to think about a scenario that I mentally put myself in. I wasn't too happy with the answers I came up with. Not too far removed from the book In His Steps, I want you to think of how you'd react if, on a Sunday morning, a stinky, homeless bum walked in while you were singing, say, "Great is Thy Faithfulness." What would you do if he sat next to you? Move? Nonchalantly act like you're going to the bathroom and get the deacons to escort him out? Would he scare you? Would you take him home? To lunch?

Would he have a reason to be at your church fellowship or mine anyway?

"Give justice to the poor and the orphan;
    uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.
Rescue the poor and helpless;
    deliver them from the grasp of evil people."
- Psalm 82:3-4 (NLT)

"But a beautiful cedar palace does not make a great king!
    Your father, Josiah, also had plenty to eat and drink.
But he was just and right in all his dealings.
    That is why God blessed him.
He gave justice and help to the poor and needy,
    and everything went well for him.
Isn’t that what it means to know me?"
    says the Lord.
- Jeremiah 22:15-16 (NLT)

Sometimes I'm afraid that my efforts to help people begin with the word "but," or a general plan to avoid getting my hands too dirty.

Thanks for sharing. Very convicting. Often my heart for others does not match God's heart for them, something I am praying through and hoping will change.
